[Vwdiesel] VW Half-Shaft

 Hello All,

It's refreshing to hear that other people have difficulties with these old VW's but more important that they are finding ways and means to resolve those mechanical difficulties. Further, it's good to know that other people are aware of the 'Left-Handed drill bit tricks.'

I've got a 90 Jetta, gas powered, that began making some motion noise. I tracked that down to the drivers side front wheel bearing. I just got the new bearing installed today before I lost my daylight. Now it's just reinstall all the other parts and pieces.

Question: I had a terrible time removing the half-shaft. After I had unbolted it from the transmission, I found a dished out washer and a circlip on the ground, of course, covered with black grease. I suspect that the tranny CV joint is not in the exact location that the VW designers had specified.

I don't remember any unusual problems removing the half-shafts from my Quantum diesel or even another Jetta. What should I look for?

I've got to get this car back on the road by tomorrow afternoon so either I get that half-shaft repaired or I find another and install it. I don't have a lot of experience with repairs to CV joints, etc.

Any problem solving techniques on this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Gerry
