[Vwdiesel] More Quantum pump questions?

Hold on there Bill,
One Quantum, soon to be 3 pumps?
If you need a pump, those prices seem good, however, how do you know there
is anything wrong with your other pumps?
Before you buy yet another pump, why not check the operating parameters of
your current pump...
There is another thing you can do first though:
If you think you can correctly install a good pump, why not do a quick swap
in of a known good pump from either your Dasher, or the Jetta, that I think
you own. It does not matter if the pump is turbo adapted, or n/a.
If you do not feel confident in doing this, then buying yet another pump
will just help others, and not improve you own position.
Back to your current pump in the Quantum....
Things to test for:
1) At idle run the return fuel into a beaker for a minute or 2 and expect
to see about a pint a minute.
2) Do the cold start pull test, where with engine off it should be stiff to
pull, and with engine running, it should be easier, with minimal effort by
about 2000rpm. If it remains stiff then pump is not doing the auto advance
equivalent of a gasser's distributor weights.
3)Ideally you should attach a pressure gauge to the pump to read it's
internal pressure, which on amn old pump may be as little as 15psi, but
should be readjusted to 45psi ballpark. I have found that this can be done
by using a spare 'out' bolt, and adding the gauge to a narrowed single
outlet banjo, behind which the bolt is perforated to give internal pump
pressure. To gain extra length, the 'out' bolt needs head thinned.
Pressure can be adjusted by tapping center pin of regulator bolt just behind
pulley. I must post some pics...
Using this above technique, I believe I have this month cured my mid range
poor mileage, which was only matching my 'about town' and 'fast interstate'
good mileage of about 40mpg [US]. This has been confounding me for the last
3 years, on an engine that has outlived it's first Quantum, but never
matched my stored up one.
