  It's not "excessive exhaust" it's excessive EGR.  More exhaust 
gas being recirculated than it should be.  Stuck EGR valve (not 
exhaust valve)  = too much EGR.  Like James said.  Check operation 
and for stuck open.  It might not run as well with it being too high 
but will still run.
