Is the seal plate on or off the engine? If off the seal extractor listed earlier works great. If on the engine with the crank in it you can take a small flat screw driver and hammer it in on the outside of the seal. Not the sealing surface but the out side of the seal. It will bend the seal a bit and it will mark the surface some. I normally put a dab of silicone on the outside and oil on the inside sealing surface. To install the easiest safest way is to use the old seal if not to deformed and tap on the old seal resting on the new seal with a hammer. If the old seal is really bad then take a large diameter punch and tap it in. Keeping it going in equally. Not to hard once you get the hang of it. I didn't want to take the whole engine apart on my 1.9 so I did the seals like this and they are still leak free. But that is shade tree mechanicing at its best.
