Good Morning VW Diesel Fans,
I have enjoyed the emails from this group for the last several months. Mostly I just read and absorbe the emails and have contributed very little. I hope that will change in the future.
I've recently acquired and operate my 'new' 1982 Diesel Rabbit and have determined that I'm getting around 46 mpg. I'm a Courier and put about 1,000 miles each week on the vehicle. With the heat of summer fast approaching, I'll redouble my efforts to get my 85 Diesel Quantum with its' factory AC in operating condition back on the road. About the only thing left to do on it is to quiet down the CV Joints. From past operating records I know that I can get between 45 to 50 mpg with it.
At this point in time, I need to dedicate some of my time to producing fuel for these diesels. I'm looking at three methods: making bio-diesel fuel from vegtable oil, making
bio-diesel fuel from algae and making hydroxgen from water.
I would appreciate some feedback on my first choice, making bio-diesel from vegtable oil. There are people who put in extra tanks, hoses, valves etc. and run straight 'filtered' vegtable oil and one can always read of their successes, usually in their advertisements when selling their vehicle :-) but never any of the problems they may have encountered along the way.
Now then, there are two things that I have come to dislike and both of them are being located somewhere between Point A and Point B with a vehicle that is no longer operating. That condition does put undue stress on my tired old body and mind, not to mention my subsequent inability to successfully complete a particular Courier Route within the allocated time limits. Thus, I only want to deal with things that have a high degree of success and filtered vegtable oil just doesn't match that criteria.
If there is interest in this group, I'll post my experiences generating hydroxgen gas. Maybe we can all learn a few things and using the best techniques of 'shade-tree mechanicing', increase the operating perameters of the already highly efficient VW Diesels.
OK. Got to go. My Favorite Wife wants a ride to work.
Sincerely,
Gerry
