  I've done similar but with ATF rather than diesel.  One time the car 
started 
knocking.  I pulled the pan only to find the rod bearings were fine (waste 
of time). 
Did a little asking and a shop up the street had a similar thing happen on 
a 
friend's parents' car many years prior.  I'd knocked enough carbon loose 
that 
the pistons were hitting it against the head.  Ran a bunch more ATF through 

it, cleared up the knocking and running as well.  :-)
