[Vwdiesel] No tail lights...

Well, as it turns out, my tail light and rad fan fuses were reversed (I was
trusting the color). Apparently my rad fan has been happily working with a
15A fuse since last summer when I bought the car. The tail light fuse
(incorrectly a 30A fuse) shows signs of melting and water damage, as does
the socket. So now to figure out how to either repair or otherwise rig my
tail lights.

Joe

Hmm.. Which may in fact be the reason my 30A fuse to the rad fan is showing
signs of melting? Freaking lovely. I'll let the group know what I find...

Ok, Gray/black and gray/red come through the dimmer to the instrument
lights
and cigarette lighter light. They're output. They're 20ga. Gray/green
is also
output, to block B, #27 then through fuse 7, out block/pin # E9 and C4 as
gray/black, to tail and parking lighs.
Input power is a 16ga, red wire from B23. It pulls 30 power (battery +)
through the
relay panel, where it's supplied by a Red, 8 ga through a "P" terminal.
So, check for power at P, then probe B23 (if your red wire to the switch
isn't
showing any potential ;-)
Generally your problem is caused by a bad ground and feeding back through

some other consumer, often a headlight, tail light, etc. You may be able
to pull
other fuses until you kill power to the consumer, then you'll have ground,
so to
speak, to your parking, etc, lights. They'll all go out when you put the
fuse back
in because the other side of the consumer will now be powered and can't
provide
any sort of ground.
See if anything comes up and I can figure out where you're pulling a
ground
from, they you can usually figure out where the bad ground is. Most likely
it's
the tail lights but could even be a main body ground from the battery. Try
stuff
like the heater fan, wipers and such and see how everything reacts when
switching on/off with your lights on, then off.
Too late to think any harder tonight!
    Loren
