[Vwdiesel] Downpipe Exhaust Leak WAS: Is my turbo shot? broken? or should I look elsewhere?

Ding ding ding!  Turbo has no in and out play, just a little click up
and down (1/8"??).  Whines when running, but seems fine.  whew!

OBVIOUS leak blowing up from the downpipe/manifold/exhaust connection
with the spring clamps.  WTF?  maybe the little sealing ring is not set
right?  

Funny, since I put this back together 1150 miles ago, but this time I
can't get the *&%$# passenger clamp off cause the heat shields and
turbos stop all THREE clamp tools from fitting.  (1. upside down exhaust
clamp, 2. "official" 2-pronged tool ($25 version from eBay -
http://bit.ly/atQDSr ), 3. big screwdriver.) - I've ordered Prothe's
knock-off version that clamps OVER the spring, will try that later in
the week.  I've also seen some wedges that pound in the side, any luck
with those?

ANYWAY, real question is has anyone else had leaks in the spring clamp
area?  Obvious issues?
