Yes, there was a recall on the EGR valves about 6 months after mine had failed 
and was replaced, so I got the recall before it was released :)

Dave, before you crack the engine apart, try disconnecting and blocking off the 
coolant hoses (both of them) to the EGR cooler.  These OFTEN develop leaks into 
the combustion chamber and is much more likely than a head gasket failure, 
UNLESS he got it really, really hot and hasn't been honest with you about it.  
As I recall, there was a recall on some models for the EGR leakage.  Hayden

well as one from the wrecked Passat that didn't have problems before the crash. 
No change in coolant loss observed. 


Plus the bubbles indicate something is getting in there. I just need to figure 
out where they are coming from!
