OK, I do not feel to dumb for swapping that first then.  OK, that makes sense 
and the points do the grounding to connect the spark.

The coil absolutely has something to do with spark! It is a large
inductor and will drive the voltage high to keep current going, thus
creating a spark. The points and condenser are what makes and breaks
the connections that will drive the inductor to want to make the
spark. (Well, the coil is also a transformer, with primary and
secondary windings, to help boost the voltage up high enough to make
the spark.)
