Thanks for the links and the description.  Got some similar info. on the VWDieselParts forum:

Once my seal kit arrives, I think I'll dive into it.  Since the pump is only has a single 
return spring (like on the rebuild link I posted earlier) it should be easier than the 
double spring ones like my spare pumps are.  Ultimate plan is to send one of those up to 
Giles and have it rebuilt and tuned up then swap that onto the 1.9D engine and see what it 
can do.
