[Vwdiesel] incessant whining (fwd)

The original alternator in my old 85 TD was still going at 480k kms with
only new brushes needed over the years. I pulled it with the engine, and
actually used it in my Westy for a while before upgrading to a 90A unit last
year. The newly rebuilt (exide) 90A unit lasted about 10k kms before the
bearing retaining plate came loose and I had to scrounge parts from the
spare 90A unit I have. I've had very good luck with the old 65A units used
circa 1985; ditto for the starters of that era.
Just got the '04 TDI, and the alt pulley is seized, but alt seems ok. I have
a new pulley to install on the weekend, along with TB, WP, etc.
