We used to pull the headlight assy out of the pre 85's, but the newer ones
don't come out that easily. That said, I can change mine is about 5 minutes.
As Loren said, brute force!! I usually push the whole assy backward after
unclipping and lifting it free, then sort of hook the fuel pressure
regulator over the lip of the core support to hold the front up. then, lift
the back and pull the filter out.

Still rediculous when compared to most other cars I've dealt with, with the
exception of the New Beetle's and Audi V8 quattro.

That hose can be purchased from 034EFI in Silicone for about $40, that's
what's on mine. Also the one on the valve cover, with five ports is
available through them, and on my car as well. No more problems. I wish they
made the breather hose for my Jetta!! I found one source online for it, for
only $81 :( That one is amde of rubber, just like my original. Though it's
probably a bit softer than mine. But, then, I only paid $200 for the whole
car, Jeez.
