The GTD forum I go to sometimes, expressed that on the IDI turbo diesels you
do not want to go past 1200 or stay up close to that for long. I usually get
it up to about 1100 but only on hard accelerations and jumping out into
traffic. I never tried to take it up as far as it could go. I don't do well
playing with fire.

I'd always understood it was an issue of heat on the aluminum
pistons and head moreso than the turbo. I've always been told
1000F which seemed relatively low yet safe. Seems like gassers
run up near 2000F at times but the "reason" it's ok for them is that
a lot of the heat is afterburn and happens in the exhaust rather than
in the combustion chamber.
