[Vwdiesel] Clutch slipping?

That's why I'm thinking the clutch is slipping. I'm only having
trouble going up hill. If I let off the throttle it seems to catch up
to the cars motion and if I add just a small amount of throttle it
keeps up.
The other thing is if I press down on the throttle in the past I would
get a puff of smoke (not a smoke screen), now I don't see anything.
Which kind of makes me think the engine is not under load hence it
would be slipping.
I hate to drop the tranny but at 260k miles maybe it's the best thing.
Maybe my rear oil seal is leaking too.
