Sandy says,
On my 94 Jetta 1.9 TD, I replaced the solid pulley about 6 years ago at the
suggestion of another dieselhead acquaintance, with the clutch-type pulley.
It would have been at about 160,000km.
It cost me $28 CDN at the time. The friend worked at a parts place.
The same (original) alternator is still working at 260,000km, but the
brushes are worn out and the slip rings have grooves in them.
There's a fresh, tested-by-me, re-man in the trunk, along with some wrenches
in case it calves on the road.
But I may change it before winter. In my old age, I hate fixing cars out in
the snow and blow by the side of the road.
Sandy,
