One additional thing occurred to me.  I replaced (preventively) a starter 
in my TDI.  Parts place sold me a small Delco starter.  Barely started.
Eventaully, i called the rebuilder, and it turned out that the starter
listed was the wrong one.  All the parts places had the wrong one listed.

Swapped it for a different rebuilt starter, and things were turning again.
