Mine had;
1. An ever so slight rough idle (intake lobe on #4 cylinder), and rough
'pick up' (passing through lower RPM) when pressing the accelerator in a
'vroom vroom' motion :)) in neutral.
2. Lots of black smoke on hard acceleration. (over-fueled #4 cylilnder/lack
of intake air)
I drove it for a few weeks, gradually getting worse until I decided to
figure it out, a few days later 'boom' (t-belt broke @idle), a trashed
cylinder head. It had 103k miles.
Changing the cam about $900, replacing the cylinder head $1,900-$2,500 (DIY)
imho, At 140kms; buy at a price that allows you to put a new cam in it, and
put your mind at ease, for another 150kms

I'm going to look at a 2004 TDI Jetta with the PD engine and 190k kms. I've
read some info about cam failures on these engines if incorrect oil is used.
Short of pulling the valve cover to inspect the cam, is there any other way
to check for cam condition?
Thanks
