Update to my 'new' Quantum wagon. All MPG's UK man-sized ones ;o)
The trip last Saturday, was 137 miles long. All but about 10 miles were on
the highway, travelling between 55 and 60mph.

I have plotted three values for the trip's mpg, because I did what I 'never
do' and put more fuel in after the first click. I paid for 10.15 litres of
fuel giving me a good result of 60.9mpg. This is the best I have done with
this car [engine], and, note when I bought it perhaps 3 years ago, in the
gold car only did 36mpg[uk] Accurate gauge timing improved that up to the
somewhat stubborn 45mpg .region.
The other 2 black splodges on the graph represent differing amounts between
the fuel pump click off. I've guessed 0.3litre and 0.5 litre as a safe
range. This gives me a fantastic 63.6, or an unbelievable 65mpg.
Either of the two estimates, exceed anything I've ever had in 15 years of
driving 7 Quantae.
I've not marked it in, but the most economic Quantum; which is the Fastback
1.6n/a, only does 64mpg at 55mph according to the handbook.
So, what can I do to improve things?
1) I could take out the 30kg of tools, which I obsessively carry around
in the back..
2) I could try a pure highway run, and maybe drop cruising speed down to
50mph
3) I could try driving with a disconnected LDA.
4) My injectors are old, and the nozzles have wear marks from erosion;
they were out of a Ford, and break pressures are low, 125bar for 3 and
130bar for 1. However, they do not have leak off, but they could be matched
better, to avoid pistons fighting each other around the flywheel.
5) As previously mentioned a lightweight trailer could assist too.
6) A rebore, and $2000 spent on new parts might get me something. ;o)
I shall keep adding to the graph from time to time,
Interestingly, I don't think all my gains have been down to the rering. I
have recently created a new method for finding the 'best' timing, that I
think always gives the optimum economy, and has also increased my power,
[whether or not this is optimal power for any setting I'm not sure, but it
is an improvement.]. I'll keep quiet about it until I'm more sure about the
results.
