At FULL OIL PUMP PRESSURE! No hoses allowed here, unless rated for 200 psi.
(start-up pulse in cold weather) and full operating pressure at all times.
The AAZ oil filter is a full flow device, fed directly from the oil pump at
full pump pressure.
Hence the flare fittings on yours, for metal lines. Cooler would have to
handle the pressure too.
Best bet is the vw plate cooler that sandwiches between the filter and base,
about 2 inches thick, which splices into the coolant hoses, standard
equipment on AAZ engines.
Perhaps it is still there, an aluminum box about 4" square, sandwiched
between the filter and base, and with hose connections to nearby main
coolant hoses, close to the water pump.
Of course, if your rad is too small, or fan not working, this will not
prevent coolant from overheating.
Most likely, in this transplant case, the rad is inadequate (or faulty).
Do not discount the possibility that the diverter partition inside the rad
has failed.
