"Has anyone tried putting a straight pipe on a VW turbodiesel & if so, what
were the results? Any MPG improvement? Was it to noisy? I have heard that a
turbo quiets the exhaust enough to make it legal." Bill Toensing, Nevada

Hello Bill....I ran a straight pipe on my 85 Jetta TD for years. The stock
muffler under the trunk was a huge heavy boat anchor thing and the pipes
in and out developed cracks, due to resonating vibrations of the diesel
system. when it was threatening to drop off, I just dropped the whole stock
set-up and swapped in a straight pipe all the way from the original
downpipe connection. I remember being amazed by the size and weight of that
huge old muffler after I got it off.

The straight pipe was quiet enough except when I really floored it and ran
it up through the gears flat out like a race car. Then you could hear it a
block away. But I didn't do that very often, and never in town where law
enforcement might investigate.
