If this is the seal I am thinking then it happens more then you think. Also might be able to do in the car if you are careful. There is one large Oring on the main body that several of the ALH engine owners have to deal with once in a while and they are able to splite the pump enough to get to this oring. But if you go to much then a rebuilder has to put your pump together as things fall out. Don't know any more then that as I don't have an ALH. Also, brother and I run a CAT filter on our TDI's. 2 micron. The are thicker and longer filters and last longer (OEM is 20K several go 50-60K or more on the CAT) and the filter is cheaper ($9-13 vs $20-25).
