Back when I did that (used veggie oil mixed with diesel), I put one of the el-cheapo inline filters in front of the OEM filter.  I found that helped extend the life of the much more expensive OEM filter by catching a bunch of the crap that would have otherwise been caught by the OEM.

Worked great and greatly extended the life of the OEM.
