If I am wrong, lets hear it because there is a lot I don't know. Also, how does Jonathan know he was at TDC or 180 degrees off? Was the valve cover off?

Yes, I'd much prefer just running the engine than taking the head off.  Unfortunately, the engine locks-up as you reach TDC.  Even with the valves closed on that cylinder..
