My first thought is a timing jumped a tooth. If so, it shouldn't smooth
out from
running, will smoke and have a very noticeable loss of power.
Glow plugs will ONLY make it run rough for the first couple minutes or
so, then
it'll smooth out. Once it's warm, they're irrelevant to smooth running.

If it's stuck rings or a bad injector, the thing to do is warm it up and
go drive
the snot out of it. Don't really want to do that if it's jumped a tooth
though,
which SHOULD be unlikely that it did that while just idling. Doesn't take
long to
pop a valve cover, set the crank to TDC and verify it hasn't jumped a
tooth. Takes
10 minutes and then you know you're safe to drive it. If that checks out
go drive
the crap out of it. Could be stuck rings as Mark said or yes, injectors
can just
go bad like that (usually something gets in them in those cases.) Driving
hard
will help loosen the rings, maybe, clear the injectors and blow the carbon
buildup
off of your valves, which is also a real possibility considering your oil
usage, long
idling, etc.
