[Vwdiesel] Mercedes cruise control

This discussion group seems to be knowledgeable on car problems other than VW, especially Mercedes diesels. I have now owned my 1983 300SD for a year. Because of its low mileage (131,000 miles now), it has not had a lot of the problems that many of the other Mercedes are having such as a non-working odometer. However, the cruise control on my 300SD doesn't work. Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot the cruise control system, or is there one item that has likely failed? If so, can it be easily repaired or does it need to be replaced?
