My son just finished a rebuild on a 16v Vw engine and he is having some troubles so I thought I might throw some things out here for those whose knowledge goes into the neither world of gas powered VW engines. These are the symptoms and what we "think" it might be:
Car runs fine at idle and up to about 3000 rpms, at that point there is a lot of lifter clatter and the oil pressure light and buzzer comes on above 3500 rpms noise goes away. After checking oil pressure switches (correct ones in correct places) and the wire connections (correct ones in correct places) it has been suggested that it might be the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump. I am stumped on this one myself, as I can't understand how the lifters (hydraulic of course) can have pressure, then not have pressure and then get pressure again? Any knowledgable input? AND if it is the pressure relief valve, can it be unstuck? TIA. Hayden
