Once again, sorry if this becomes a repost, my internet has been acting wonky today.
I recall having a wrench bent into a "C" shape to get at a bolt somewhere behind the injection pump. It has been 4-5 years, but I am pretty sure I was doing a similar project and didn't want to remove the pump.
I just bought a cheapo 13mm wrench, had someone heat it up with a torch, and bend it sideways into the C shape. I know you can buy them like that, but couldn't find one in town and this was much cheaper anyway. That bent wrench is about the only 13mm wrench that I haven't lost!
As for the thermostat, I bet your are right. My Explorer wasn't heating up at all and I pulled the t-stat assuming I'd find it open. It wasn't but I put the new one in anyway. After that the cooling system worked properly and I had a heater so I can only guess that it was opening too early.
