[Vwdiesel] [Audi-VW-Diesels] Head Bolts and more

Hi Dave
My old retired VW mechanic had a shop in the 80's and 90's and
rebuilt hundreds of VW 1.5 and 1.6 diesels. The 11mm 12 point Rabbit gas
head bolts are stretch bolts. He rebuilt most 11mm diesel blocks using the
Rabbit gas stretch bolt and said he had much better luck with head gaskets
than if he used the stock diesel 11mm non stretch allen head bolts.

I have three types of bolts from three engines in my garage:
11mm Allen Hex head. Bentley indicates this is non-stretch
11mm 12-point allen like head. Bentley indicates this is a stretch
12mm 12 point socket head (takes a 12 point socket to remove)

I wish I could remember who said gasser bolts were somehow better. I wonder
if the difference was stretch or non-stretch? (And the poster assumed that
stretch was gas and non-stretch was diesel.) This is my guess.

Hmm, so do I use the reuseable bolts, or do I use the stretch bolts that are
presumably on the way? My inclination is that VW thought the stretch ones
were better and that is why they went that way.

Also, I just noticed that the rod bolts are stretch bolts. Wish I would
have realized that when I put in the big order including bearings.

I don't have to buy the bearings if I choose not to. What do you all think?
Any way to judge the condition of the bearings without taking it apart and
having to replace the rod bolts?

I am starting to think more and more about just rebuilding it and maybe
driving the car for awhile.

Thanks guys!
