On my 1Y, there was a breather fitting down on the bottom of the block, not sure if it was
original or added by the shop that installed the engine for the PO of the vehicle. I
suspect it may have been added as that fitting has traces of the old green block paint on
it and the 1.9D block is painted black.
In any event, the fitting was there, but the gasket behind it had no hole in the center.
I drilled out a hole and attached a breather hose to it and ran that up to the valve cover
breather, that is apparently off an early TDI:
