  I think there are 3 cranks for these.  A 1.5 crank, 1.6 crank and 
a 1.6 turbo crank.  I'm not looking it up at the moment but I think 
the stroke, perhaps a journal size may be diffrent. If not then it's 
the same as a 1.6 crank but I'm pretty sure the stroke is different.
  The TD crank has "deeper" hardening on the journals and the 
casting numbers are raised vs recessed or vise versa.  My TD 
crank was worn on the thrust, my good rebuilder went belly up so 
I used a std. 1.6 crank in it.  For all intents and purposes, the same. 
They're all forged.  If the journals are good on the Vanagon crank, 
it's fine.  As James said, different block or different crank, new 
bearings.
