I don't mean to be overly repetitious but I got a starter for my TDI
which was about $90, and was a 1 kW starter, or something smaller, at least.
Fit fine, just didn't have the kick in the winter.
Probably 30 hours of effort later, I determined that the parts catalog
was wrong, and got the correct starter, I think a 7703 (manual transmission)
rebuild for $130. The outfit I got it from warranties it for life,
so it was a reasonable approach.
The correct starter was a 2 kW starter.
The only starters I've rebuilt in recent years are tractor starters. The
car ones are just too common, and relatively inexpensive.

I'm going to call a local rebuilder in the morning. O'Reily's website
shows a rebuilt for $90 here in Kalifornia. And as Loren points out
I'm dubious that it's even for a diesel.
