Not quite: F = m * a In this equation, Force and mass are directly proportional at 1:1 ratio. a (acceleration in M/sec/sec) from that one further calculates that for change in the velocity (m/sec), there you get a second order for acceleration when you resolve for acceleration (since distance will be approximately the same....i.e. how much the arm and hammer compress).
The 1/2 part comes from solving for that distance: s = 1./2 * a * t^2
In other words: three times the hammer size = three times the force delivered in blow. Three times the velocity = NINE times the force delivered in blow.
