  I've always had to remove the manifolds (exhaust really but it's 
easier to pull them all, once the head's off)  The bottom of them
protrudes below the head surface.
  As stated, if it has a lot of miles, it'll probably need exhaust valves, 
guides, seats and intake valves ground, surfaced, valve stem seals... 
injectors, glow plugs...
