If it has oil the bottom ends are tough. Unless it has tons of miles the
bottom end should be fine. Bent valves is my guess. Messing with the pan is
a pain and isn't likely to let you know anything. You should probably do a
timing belt just for grins because the car is new to you and doing the head
gasket at the same time is a snap. If it is bent valves a couple of hundred
in parts and gaskets and a weekend or two and you will have an 800 dollar
runner.

I haven't tried yet, but I think it is stuck both ways.
Once I tow it back to cheyenne I will drop the pan and check there for
issues, then I will pull the head.

the engine contra-clockwise? If so, you may be in luck & just have to
