BTDT. GOOD local shop did two blocks for me. First one got assembled
and every 10K to 15K miles I'd start it and bury it and the house in a
white
cloud of smoke! Wasn't using a lot but sure burned it at startup. Thought
it
was valve stem seals or turbo. Nope and nope so talked to several
machinists
after it was due for the 3rd set of rings with about 25K on it. (still had
the Total
Seal second rings.) Thanks to TS, we deduced it was too fine of a honing
job,
not holding enough oil and wearing the rings down. I got the RA specs from

them, got a real world desctiption of what it should look like from a
machinist
friend (shold be about like the brushed aluminum slidey thing on a 3 1/2
floppy).
Re-honed the partly assembled engine, tore down the Jetta's and re-honed it

and both are happy a good 50K later. Just a basic KD or Sears 3-stone hone

with oil. Wash the cylinders with soap and water a couple times, rinse and
wipe
down with just enough oil to prevent rust.
