[Vwdiesel] burning 1 qt per 50 miles? Grrrr..

I don't know what kind of a valve cover a diesel Westy has but I know that
in a Rabbit diesel if the breather screen in the valve cover gooks up it
will blow oil out sometimes enough to fuel the engine. The best way I have
found to clean it is to take the valve cover to the local radiator shop and
hot tank it. Probably isn't your problem but it does cause massive oil loss
when it happens.

82 stock Diesel Westy. Rebuilt engine 1 1/2 years ago.

I am so done with this machine shop: First, they didn't mill the
prechambers even with head (blew gasket after 3 blocks - I pull head,
they re-mill it). Second, left out the o-ring on the intermediate shaft
carrier (Yep, I re-did all the seals after a year to find it.)

NOW: burning/blowing 1 qt per 50-100 miles!

9000 miles on a complete rebuild. Used cheapo "Top Line" Argentine
rebuild kit per machine shop recommendation (I like Argentina, but
really!).

I'm thinking either a ring is broken and/or rings didn't set and the
cylinders glazed.

Does this sound reasonable? I noticed the burning oil after I fixed the
missing seal. I assumed it was just leaking a bunch, but this is much
worse than before (I think).

Could the rings not seated because of the blown gasket early on?

I'm gonna need some hand-holding doing rings.

Will in Alaska.
