So I pulled the cam and was pleased to see that all the pucks had gone back to approximately the same position, indicating to me that maybe the valves had not bent. I was excited for a few minutes.
Then I pulled the belt all the way off. Completely intact, and the engine still wouldn't rotate.
Crap.
So I pulled the oil pan.
The rod cap for #4 was sitting in it. S***. F***.
Upon initial looking, it seems that the rod smacked the oil pump housing which was the source of the chunks of metal in the pan. I need to look closer and see if anything else was damaged.
So where from here?
My reason for buying the car was to get it fixed up a bit and running and sell it for a little profit. Not sure that will be the case now...
Options I've thought about:
*Repair/Rebuild the engine
*Part out the rest of it. Uugh
*Stick the wrecked Passat's TDI engine in there and drive the Rabbit around until I get the parts gathered to put it in something better (like my bus)
Assuming the damage is limited to the cap being off and needing to replace the bearings on that rod and the oil pump, what else would I need to consider doing?
