[Vwdiesel] shifter adjustment

  Recently spent some money to upgrade the exhaust system on my
1980 rabbit pickup.  I went w techtonics 2" for my 1.6 na. At the
same time I installed an a3 twin downpipe exhaust manifold. Included
in the techtonics kit was a replacement part for the shift linkage so
that the new downpipes would clear. I installed it and now I am having
trouble getting 2nd and 4th gear. In fact I can't get those two gears
at all. I've adjusted the shift rod linkage according to Bentley and
still no go. The truck shifted pretty decent before the new exhaust as
I replaced all the plastic and rubber wear items just a few thousand 
miles ago.  There is more slop in the shift lever to shift rod conn-
ction than I would like but I don't think it's my problem tho I could
be wrong about that. I have also recently adjusted the shifter in the
cabin so I'm pretty sure that is still ok tho I will recheck that next.
Any suggestions?
