[Vwdiesel] redo. diesel in a type 2 bus?

So i have a 72 bus and my friend has a synchro van. what the possiblity of going diesel.  we cant find any vw tdi but merceds four cylinders are plentiful here. someone send too heavy and severly affects drivability and balance. i assume the rear suspension would have to be beefed up and use a stronger trans and brakes.  any links or food for thought.
