[Vwdiesel] TDI EGR Delete-experiences?

After reading some threads on TDI Club about people actually losing a bit of mileage without a chip to compensate for the difference in MAF readings (or correct it or whatever...) my friend decided to go ahead and leave the system alone.

What is the system that was mentioned to capture engine oil and prevent the oil mist from going into the intake? This seems like a good option to prevent the carbon gumming the intake manifold.
