[Vwdiesel] 1.6TD Timing issue

I just got my 1.6td, freshly rebuilt, into my van, set the timing to 1mm, and it won't stay running that way. If I advance it a bunch, it idles perfectly. I'm using the mark on the clutch plate as well as the one on the crank pulley to find tdc. Valves are timed right,too. I even timed it again,  same results. Not sure what to do from here, any advice appreciated.
