[Vwdiesel] smoke screw

Loren,
Thanks for the reply. I don't baby the car I am on full throttle a lot just to keep up with
traffic and I do enjoy using an engine to its max.  The exhaust is in good shape and
I change the air filter every few months so that leaves the injectors. Hmmm.  At
42.70 apiece plus shipping I think I'm going to hold off for a while and see what
kind of improvement the fuel adjustment makes.  Plus, this is a 20 year old car
that I'm not sure I'm going to have for more than maybe a year.  I did swap out one
injector, the easiest one, with a spare I had and it seemed to make a small
improvement so I suspect you are entirely correct in your analysis.  Always
enjoy reading your posts.
Peter

One
question I have about all this is: did the max fuel
screw tighten up on
its' own?  Or is there some internal pump
wear that causes the fuel
  delivery to increase?  Anybody have
any info about this?
  TIA

You usually can't tighten them enough to get much smoke out of it,
if all is correct.  At this age, it could have a different pump or someone
may have dinked with it.  USUALLY, black smoke on an untampered with pump
means you have a dirty air filter, restricted exhaust or worn injectors.
If you drive the car really easy then you could have a lot of buildup on your
valves and it's time to drop to 3rd gear and go have some fun! (Italian
tune-up).  Carbon builds up on the intake valves and restricts air flow,
making for black smoke.
Things don't go out of adjustment so when things haven't been messed
with, I strongly urge the owner to find the problem rather than just "fix" it by
turning down the fuel.
