In reality, I haven't seen a VW diesel piston that needed that much  
cleaning.  
If it was running poorly, then a little scraping.  If re-ringing then  
scrape, clean 
in solvent, or have tanked, clean the ring grooves WELL and re-ring.   
Otherwise 
whatever's left on the pistons will very quickly burn out when it's running 
 properly.
