I ran into a similar issue on my 1.9D engine (no A/C). I damaged the water pump pulley
(stamped steel) and had to replace it and had trouble finding a pulley with the right
offset at a couple of junkyards I hit. I eventually found one that was close on a gasser
that had a cast iron pulley. It was sticking out about 1/8" too far. But with the thick
web of the cast iron, I was able to chuck it up in a lathe and shave that much material
off the inside of the pump flange and get it to line up perfectly. So there are different
pulleys to different amounts of offset of the mounting flange vs. the center of the
pulley, kind of like with car wheels and various offset/backspacing measurements. Some
are flush across the outer face, some are more centered and then there are the stamped vs.
the cast versions.
