VW isn't the only make that substitutes cheap plastic for metal. My 2001 German designed Mexican made Ford Focus ZX3 was seaping antifreeze around the plastic thermostat housing. When I removed the housing I found the cheap plastic ridge that held the rubber gasket in place was crumbling. Got a replacement at our local NAPA store & it leaks no more. However, with a few exceptions such as this, my focus has been the most trouble free car I have ever owned & I am 78 years old. I have found even my 1983 Mercedes 300 SD has some parts that have failed but shouldn't have, such as the drivers side door catch & the cruise control which is still working on the Focus. FYI, the Focus has 144,XXC miles & the 300SD has 131,XXX miles on it. New, the Mercedes cost $38,000, 3 times the new price of my Focus.
