I stuck my digital volt meter in the hazard light switch socket on the way to work and back.
was giving me high 12 volts and jumping above 13 on way to work.
on way home with lights on no charging at all.
running on battery all the way home with 11.5 volts in battery and dropping.
light still on at idle and no light when moving but no charging at all.
I will check all connections and if good, then time for a new alt.

let ya know, thanks all

this does have A/C, but this does not seem to be a belt issue

I still  need to remove the alt. when I do the timing belt job, but does
this trigger  anything for anyone.  very odd.

Sounds like my Rabbit when the B+ wire, where it connects to the  battery,
was corroded.  I didn't have a bright red light at idle but it was  visible
in the evening or dark.  Either had to clean the terminal or put on  a new
one and it worked perfectly.  Use  your volt meter, set it to a  low voltage
setting and check for "voltage drop" across any connections you can
(ground, battery, battery to B+ post, etc).  See if you find one that gives  you
some voltage, indicating its going through your meter better than the
connection.
