VW Inline 4 motors have been shoved into beetles for a long time. Of course you'll have to figure out where to put the radiator and such, but it is doable.
I don't know anything about the gear ratios other than what you said, there are plenty of rebuilders so surely there are good options.
You will need the adapter and associated bits to bolt it up, though.

No chance at all. the bug uses a 4-bolt pattern, the kelsel uses a different shape and more bolts aranged in a different pattern. Not too sure about gearing on the Bug transmissions, I don't know of any. Kennedy may sell an addapter for that, but then fitting it under the rear hood may be tricky as well.
