I agree, those special crimp style fuel line clamps do a good job but are not re-useable unless you are very careful when removing them.
I had a heck of a time finding replacements for them, the key was to look for between 9mm-11mm clamps as the OD of the fuel line is 10mm.
I found some on e-bay from a guy in Canada I think, but that was all I found after a few days of looking.
so I got 10 of them for future needs.
I do not have the crimper tool, but something that seems to work pretty well.

Definitely check the clamps at the fuel filter.  My 98 Jetta had bubbles in the fuel and was hard to start after sitting for awhile.  Replaced the screw clamps on the thermo bypass lines with ones made out of .041 safety wire and both issues went away.  Unfortunately the full circle style clamps as used on the factory radiator hoses do a better job of sealing air out then the easier to use screw style, especially in the small sizes used on the fuel system.
