[Vwdiesel] voltage regulator issues in 92 Jetta TD

Yeap,  my "commutator" does have groves in it and most likely needs replaced.  but who the heck will do that for me or where would I get one.
I will check the connectors to the D+ connector at lunch, thanks.

looks like it is time to dive into this car, it needs oil change and timing belt change anyway, but the garage is full of beetle project.  Going to have to get some primer on the raw steal and swap the car outside while I work on the Jetta TD then.

So, does  it really matter what voltage reg. you get as a few are listed.
I have  swapped it out with others so many times I have no idea what #
should be in  there?
I just got this one to replace the failing one that brushes had worn  down
on.  The must be an issue with the bushing they ride on that is  pressed
onto the Alt. shaft.

So long as your regulator is rated as high or higher than your  output,
you'll be fine.  I've gone through something like ONE set of  brushes on the
pickup (240K miles).  Have you disassembled the alt and  inspected your
commutator?  (I think that's right.)  You may have  grooves worn into the copper
and not getting proper seating/contact of the  brushes as well as premature
wear.  The D+ terminal is where your power  gets to the alt's field, to start
it charging so be sure that's clean, the  contacts for the regulator,
inside the alternator hole and  of course good  ground.  Doesn't sound like an
issue with your B+ to battery circuit but  voltage drop or just physically
inspect and clean all connections.  Cleaning all contacts usually clears up
those problems.
The one I get to deal with is a worn out busing in the backend of  the
alternator of the Jetta.  Don't want to put a new alt in it but boy,  that's
the easiest way to fix it.  Had a guy build a new bushing but he  made it out
of brass and it vibrated and flaked all over.  Looked  like you'd had a
head-on with a gold mine, under the hood!  :-)  Will  have to see if he'll
turn out a steel one for me.
